have a look at rhe above link about my towns game of mass football. this is one of only 3 known games of mass footbal left in the country. the other 2 are in ashbourne and orkney.

we play 3 games the first on good friday, the second on easter tuesday and the final one on easter saturday. the game starts at 6 pm and usually goes on well into the night.

the person who "hails" (scores) the ball gets to keep it. its made of leather and weighs around 2.5 pounds even more when its had a drink in the river or beck. hundreds of people play and there is sometimes thousands watching.

yes looks like good fun. saw a program on this on telly a few years ago .. looks tiring as well lol :lol: :lol:

i was the good looking one :lol:. there is never any trouble at the game. thats how its allways been, sure it gets rough but never violent. next game is on tuesday.

uppies won last night, so its one each. will be a good game on saturday!!

well after a pretty rough gane last night the uppies won and they also win this years seris 2 -1 here is a photo of the game

there are rumours though this may be the last series as the council have effectively "stolen"the land its played on and sold it to tesco, they are bulding a huge superstore on it.

the land was given to the townsfolk of workington by the local wealthy family in the early 1900s for recreation purposes, the council say that never happend and promptly sold the land for 15 million quid
